Property & Evidence Unit

The major function of this unit is to retain evidence and operate Garland's auto pound. The unit is also responsible for:

Appropriated
Control
The Proper Intake
Release or Disposal of All Property Confiscated
Seized or Otherwise Taken into Custody by Any Authorized Personnel of This Department
Storage

This includes recovered stolen property, abandoned or found property, and personal property.

Evidence to Prove Guilt or Innocence

The evidence is any physical item that may or may not require some form of scientific analysis that may be used in a court of law to prove guilt or innocence and includes the following:

Contraband items, the possession of which is illegal or prohibited.
Instruments used in the commission of a crime, such as burglar tools, murder/assault weapons, forged documents, etc.
Results of a crime, such as bloodstains, broken glass, etc.

Property, evidence, and vehicles that are held by the Garland Police Department (other than contraband) and cannot be traced to an owner are sold at a public auction with the proceeds being deposited into the City of Garland general fund.

Impounded Vehicles

To pick up your impounded vehicle, a required release form is provided by the Police Department, and fees must be paid at the impound lot.

Registered Vehicle Owners

If you are the registered owner of the vehicle, a driver's license and proof of insurance are required for the release of the vehicle and/or removal of personal possessions from the vehicle. If you wish to have another person pick up your vehicle or remove personal property, an affidavit entitled “Authority to Release Vehicle” must be signed by you before a notary public. A notary is not available at the police department. You may request the affidavit to be faxed to you by calling 972-205-3435.

Owners of Vehicles Not Registered

If you have not properly and legally registered your vehicle, you must provide an original unaltered (no whiteouts) title with your name listed as the owner, your driver's license, and proof of insurance. If you wish to have another person pick up your vehicle or remove personal property from the vehicle, an affidavit entitled “Authority to Release Vehicle” must be signed by you before a notary public and have proof of insurance. A notary is not available at the police department. The person you designate to pick up the vehicle must have the notarized affidavit, the original title, and his/her driver's license. Location to Pay Fees & Recover Vehicle

The Garland Auto Pound (where the vehicles are stored), telephone 972-205-3909, is located at 1630 Commerce Street in Garland and is open 24 hours per day. You must have a release provided to you by the Police Department, a valid driver's license, and payment in the form of cash or credit card in order to pick up your vehicle.

Vehicle & Property Auctions

All vehicles and abandoned property are auctioned online.

Property

Evidential property may be released to a person upon presentation of a signed court order specifically awarding the property to that person (Driver's license or legal identification). Otherwise, only the Garland police officer or detective handling the case can authorize the release of property from the Property Room. Found Property

Found property logged into the Property Room may be authorized by a Garland Police Officer to be released to a person with proper identification and proof of ownership. In some cases, filing a report may be required. Do not assume because you have lost an item that the Police Department has it. In most cases, if the stolen property has been recovered, a detective will contact you.
